USA Rugby Player Tom Coolican Overview

Tom Coolican is rugby union player of America who plays for Australian Shute Shield side Eastern Suburbs and National Rugby Championship side Sydney Stars. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio. He was brought up in Sydney where he started his rugby career. He studied at Saint Ignatius’ College in Riverview while he played early rugby at Lind Field Rugby Club. He won his first XV honors at Saint Ignatius which caused his selection in New South Wales. After high school he continued to represent Sydney University in 2008. As member of the Sydney University team his team stood second to Gordon in the JR Henderson Shield Grand final.


Tom received an invitation to play with the New York Athletic Club in 2013. As club rugby has not full professional status in the USA, Coolican along with plying for NYAC continued his legal education studying Masters of Sports Law. Coolican was called up to play with the United States national team against Uruguay in March 2014. He won his first cap in the first leg in Montevideo. In the next fixture, he came at the 74th minute and played a part in the 32-13 win to qualify for the 2015 Rugby World Cup.
