A £100m expansion plan has been approved for Liverpool FC to raise Anfield’s capacity from about 45,500 to about 59,000. Main Stand will be expanded by 8,300 seats and the Anfield Road Stand by 4,800 seats. Construction beginning next year will be completed by the 2016-17 season. But objection has been raised over Liverpool’s plan that it will destroy the area. Main stand expansion includes conference, banqueting, club shop and more car parking facilities. The club would be allowed to host major international fixtures and European finals according to redevelopment plan.
Currently some parts of the stadium are not according to UEFA and Premier League standards to host the major games. A minimum 50,000 capacity stadium, accommodation and changing rooms for players and match officials are demands of UEFA. Some businessmen said money will go away from local people by closing Anfield Road. Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson said: “This plan will bring new jobs, investment and housing.” There are proposals for building 250 new homes for removing 296 homes and for construction of 100 bed hotel. Last year a consultation with the residents showed more than 80% supported the plan.
